I have finished with my final discovery exercise.
What were your favorite discoveries or exercises on this learning journey?
My favorite exercise was creating my blog and fine tuning it along the way.
How has this program assisted or affected your lifelong learning goals?
It served as a reminder to the importance of continuing education. The most important thing is we can overcome any obstacle or challenge.
Were there any take-aways or unexpected outcomes from this program that surprised you?
I was really surprised when I found the podcast for “Lansing Public Library”. They have incorporated blogs; RSS feeds, podcasts, Flickr, and bookmarks at Del.icio.us for their customers. They have educated their customers with step by step instruction.
What could we do differently to improve upon this program’s format or concept?
The weekly discovery exercises should be shorter because it is difficult to fit it in. Some branches maybe short of computers. And at our branch the computers are very slow and we have had several computer issues.
If we offered another discovery program like this in the future, would you again chose to participate?
I would possibly participate but I would first explore what the program consists of first.

Audiobooks
I downloaded Overdrive on my home computer. It was very easy to do. I went to our JPL website to Digital Audiobook Collection and to my account. I found several titles I might try to download to my MP3 Player when I get it.
I would rather sit down and read a book. It is hard for me to listen to one it puts me to sleep. I listen to music all the time. I was thinking about converting my cds to MP3 files.

Podcasts
Podcast
I found a podcast on Podcast Pickle from Mount Kisco Library.
“Kiscocast: The Earth Day Edition”. Featuring the Veggie Van, an interview with Mr. Lee Brennan of the Westchester County Government and interacting with the kids asking questions.

The other library podcast that caught my attention was the Lansing Public Library.
The Lansing Public Library is using several items we have discovered during our JPL 2.0 journey. They are using blogs, RSS feeds, and podcasts for Adult News and Reviews, Teen News and Reviews, Youth News and Reviews, Technology News and Tips, Upcoming Programs and Events, Photo from Library Events on Flicker and favorite websites on del.ico.us to reach out to their patrons. With user friendly self help step by step instruction for their patrons.
I added Lansing Library Adult News & Reviews blog and podcast to my bloglines account.
I downloaded Quick Time and ITunes on my home computer to get their podcast.

YouTube video added
It was easy to add the video to my blog but you have to go to Edit Html and then paste the embedded code into your post.
YouTube
YouTube is interesting you can search by name, by video with subcategories, channel and subcategories, and community and subcategories. My biggest dislike about YouTube is you have to search to find what you want because there are a lot of useless and unnecessary videos.
The video I choose was about Caylee Anthony who has been missing since June. This morning on News 4 Jax I saw this story about a group of internet bloggers who searched wooded areas in Blanchard Park over the weekend. I am adding the video from YouTube “Caylee Marie Anthony Case Dog 8/17”. It also covers the pros and cons from various issues involved with this case.

I think JPL could use YouTube to make a video of upcoming programs and events at the library. New books and materials could also be showcased
My favorite library dominos was "Dominoearth".

Discovering Web 2.0 tools
GENI is a genealogy free program and you can create a GEDCOM file. A GEDCOM is an acronym for GEnealogical Data COMmunication. It is very useful to use GEDCOM files because it can be converted by any genealogy software program. I think I will investigate this site more thoroughly to see if it offers free family tree storage.
VUFIND would be a positive and useful Web 2.0 application for the library.

Zoho
I used Zoho Spreadsheet. I developed a spreadsheet for new materials processed and then I renamed it to New Items Processed and made it public.
Zoho writer was very easy to use. Zoho would be an alternative way to create and save different types of documents. For example in Family Tree Maker when I want to share a family record you can choose the format and the easiest to use is convert the file to a PDF. With Zoho you could publish the file and make it private or public. From what I have read you could set it up to collaborate with others. Under options, then settings, choose to allow comments for public documents.
I found it easy to add my blog. I still need to learn how to link my document to my blog.

Wiki's
I found the St. Joseph County Public Library
Subject Guides and the Princeton Public Library Book Lovers interesting with useful information.
I do not see where WIKI would be helpful for the library.

On Library 2.0 & Web 2.0
Perspective #2 Into a new world of librarianship
I agree with what Michael Stephens said, “Librarian 2.0 also listens to staff and users when planning, tells the stories of successes and failures, learns from both, celebrates those successes, allows staff time to play and learn, and never stops dreaming about the best library services.”
I have worked for JPL since 2004. I think we have come a long way since then. Online library cards, accepting credit cards, online renewal, sending courtesy reminders, ask a librarian, home work help and many more useful tools. A more streamline user friendly website.
I felt that what he said “Never stops dreaming about the best library services” goes with our vision “Start here and Go Anywhere.”
Perspective #4 To better bibliographic services
I also agree with what John Riemer stated “Libraries can package and push their content to users.” The web 2.0 can be a very useful tool for JPL to attract more customers from outside of the library. The internet is a very big tool and we have to take advantage of it. We have come a long way, but we still have a long way to go.

Technorati
I found that Technorati was very interesting. While exploring libraries, I found an article about the Washington DC Library that is planning cutbacks in hours and services. JPL is not the only library experiencing budget cuts.

I thought this was easy. Had a few problems with it. I like the smaller version at the top of the page.

Problem Uploading from Comic Strip Generator
When I tried to upload my comic from Comic Strip Generator it did not appear on my blog. So I went back to the CSG and copied and pasted into my post. I closed it all out and went back to it and then the other one appeared.

Finding Feeds
I thought finding feeds and adding using the URL was easy. I also added the RSS buttons on my blog. I could place the RSS button on my IE command bar at home but not on my computer at work.

Technology
I have Roxio Easy Media Creator it gives you creative inspiration and all the tools you need to enhance your digital lifestyle. Create, share and enjoy your movies, memories and music. I really enjoy the photo suite program. I was looking at what the new version has to offer. It is expensive but worth it.

Native American Heritage Display 11 19 7
I use Walgreen photo share and storage. I did sign up and explore Flicker, but I prefer using Walgreen’s site.
I had the opportunity to participate in the Native American Heritage program at UPK. I took 53 pictures and this is my favorite display of Native American Art
I had permission to take the pictures.
I have permission to use it for this exercise.
